چکیده

We study the effect of active galactic nuclei (AGN) heating on the chemodynamical evolution of elliptical galaxies and their X-ray and optical properties using highresolution Λ-dominated cold dark matter cosmological simulations. Our model considers an AGN as being “active” when a convergent gas inflow condition exists within a galaxy’s nucleus; otherwise, the AGN is assumed to remain dormant. This induces a self-regulated activity for the AGN, the result of which leads to a stable hot corona and the suppression of significant late-time star formation characteristics not encountered in traditional chemodynamical models of ellipticals. These properties of our AGN heating model leads to a system consistent with both the X-ray and optical properties of comparable elliptical galaxies.

The Chemo-Dynami al Evolution of Ellipti al Galaxies: Pre-heating and AGN heating

We study the chemodynamical evolution of elliptical galaxies and their X-ray and optical properties using high-resolution cosmological simulations. Our Tree N-body/SPH code includes a self-consistent treatment of radiative cooling, star formation, supernovae feedback, and chemical enrichment. We present a series of ΛCDM cosmological simulations which trace the spatial and temporal evolution of ...

Mechanical AGN feedback: controlling the thermodynamicalevolution of elliptical galaxies

A fundamental gap in the current understanding of galaxies concerns the thermodynamical evolution of ordinary, baryonic matter. On the one hand, radiative emission drastically decreases the thermal energy content of the interstellar plasma (ISM), inducing a slow cooling flow towards the centre. On the other hand, the active galactic nucleus (AGN) struggles to prevent the runaway cooling catastr...

Radiative feedback from massive black holes in elliptical galaxies . AGN flaring and central starburst fueled by recycled gas

The importance of the radiative output from massive black holes at the centers of elliptical galaxies is not in doubt, given the well established relations among electromagnetic output, black hole mass and galaxy optical luminosity. We show how this AGN radiative output affects the hot ISM of an isolated elliptical galaxy with the aid of a high-resolution hydrodynamical code, where the cooling ...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Observable consequences of kinetic and thermal AGN feedback in elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters

We have constructed an analytical model of AGN feedback and studied its implications for elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters. The results show that momentum injection above a critical value will eject material from low mass elliptical galaxies, and leads to an X-ray luminosity, LX, that is ∝ σ , depending on the AGN fuelling mechanism, where σ is the velocity dispersion of the hot gas. This...
